Cleveland County NC Facts

Cleveland Co, NC formed in 1841 from Rutherford & Lincoln Counties. Named for Colonel Benjamin Cleveland, a leader of the western Carolina frontier & a hero at the Battle of Kings Mountain

March 8, 1841 - First county business conducted at the home of William Weathers

November 8, 1841 - First court held in Cleveland County. Judge Mathis E. Manley presides

1842 - Shelby established as the county seat. Named after Colonel Isaac Shelby, also a hero at the Battle of Kings Mountain

May 12, 1861 - Daniel Brooks, free black man joins the Confederate Army

1871 - Double Shoals Yarn Mill opens

1873 - Cleveland Cotton Mill Number One opens on Knob Creek, also known as Schenk, Ramsaur & Company

February 11, 1874 - Town of Kings Mountain chartered

1888 - Cleveland Cotton Mill Number Two opens at Lawndale

1899 - Lawndale Baptist Church organized

1899 - Lawndale Railroad & Industrial Company in business

January 31, 1907 - Kings Mountain Savings & Loan incorporated

January 2, 1911 - A.V. Wray store opens for business

January 28, 1911 - The improved Order of Red Man Club held a dance on the court square

February 6, 1911 - Patterson Springs Hotel sold at auction. Never re-opens

June 27, 1911 - J.W. Hogue invents the cotton seed separator

1912 - Cleveland Cotton Mill Number One closes

April 20, 1922 - First radio comes to Cleveland County

1927 - E. D. Bridges Mercantile opens in Lawndale

February 28, 1928 - The Central Hotel burns. Three people killed

August 28, 1928 - First National building crashes. Six people killed

June 15, 1931 - Cleveland County cited as Model County by State Legislature

June 25, 1931 - Women selected to serve on jury duty for the first time in Cleveland County

September 1, 1935 - First automobile driver's license issued

September 15, 1936 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt visits Shelby

January 4, 1945 - Senator Clyde R. Hoey began his second term in Congress twenty-five years after his first term ended.

October 2, 1948 - Wesson Cafe opens in Lawndale

March 12, 1953 - Radio station WKMT in Kings Mountain went on the air at 6AM

? - Dennis Jones builds first new house in Double Shoals in 100 years

May 4, 2001 - Cleveland Cotton Mill Number Two closes
