Colorado
Springs information:
Colorado
Springs is located at the base of 14,110’ Pikes Peak. This “Purple Mountain
Majesty” inspired Katherine Lee Bates to write “America the Beautiful”
a century ago and still excites over 6 million travelers who visit Colorado
Springs and the Pikes Peak Region every year. Colorado’s second largest city
has evolved from a Victorian spa resort to a sophisticated city with a ‘small
town’ ambiance. It is home to many military installations including Peterson
Air Force Base, NORAD, and the Air Force Academy. With an altitude of 6,035’,
the climate is warm in the summer and moderate in the spring, fall and winter,
with an average of 300 days of sunshine a year. Classified an “alpine
desert”, the dry, clean air was once a destination to heal tuberculosis
patients. Today, visitors enjoy the climate because it allows for year round
outdoor recreation.

2005 Reunion Planning Meeting
23 June 2004
MINUTES
The meeting started at approximately 7:00 pm at Denny's on North Academy Blvd.
Members in attendance were: Ken Hilte ('77); Ginger (Angolia) Clark ('77); Chuck
('78) and Tina ('80) Schwarz, Alan Lickiss ('80), Ed Thayer ('65), Frank Enos
('71) and Judy (Kosan) Bygott ('72). Minutes were discussed and approved, as
they had been e-mailed prior to the meeting.
The Hilton Hotel chain has officially bought out our hotel, currently known as
the Antlers Adams Mark. They are scheduling a $7.5 million renovation beginning
in November '04 and plan to be finished by March '05.
Judy brought the registration form to look over for adjustments before sending
them out.
Chuck said he would check to see if the Flying W offers military discounted
rates. Also, if Royal Gorge is chosen, he will check prices for that as well.
There was a discussion about the transportation issue. Currently,
transportation is not included in prices. Ken and Ginger plan to rent vans
during reunion week to help transporting people to the various sites.
Discussed the itinerary line by line. For Friday 3:30-9 pm, add "Bar-Hopping,"
"(Black and White Attire)," and "Note: Flying W does not serve alcohol." Move
the 4/15/05 early bird date back to 3/31/05 due to attrition date. Take off
Seven Falls, add Royal Gorge and Garden of the Gods.
Per Alan, he thought he would be able to get short-sleeved T-shirts with our
one-color logo on it for a reasonable price.
Tina will check with Howard's Bar-B-Q for picnic pricing. Ken encouraged us to
use Howard's because it is not a chain and will probably have better prices than
Bennett's.
Each person on the committee will contact 15 people prior to the next meeting.
Will bring info back with new contacts for Tina and Chuck to add to their list.
Currently, 89 "definite maybe's."
Registration form to be disseminated by 6/30/04.
Chuck's new e-mail address is: cschwarz@adelphia.net.
Next meeting scheduled for July 14, 2004, at 7 pm at the Village Inn on Palmer
Park and Academy.
Meeting was adjourned at 9:19 pm.
Respectfully submitted,

2005 Reunion Planning Meeting
16 February 2004
MINUTES
The meeting started at 6:30 pm with a chili dinner hosted Chuck and Tina
Schwarz. Members in attendance were: Ken Hilte ('77); Ginger (Angolia) Clark
('77); Chuck ('78) and Tina ('80) Schwarz and Judy (Kosan) Bygott ('72). (Alan
and Ed were unavailable.)
Minutes were discussed and approved, as they had been e-mailed prior to the
meeting.
Chuck brought up a good idea: Contact some local restaurants/shops/retail
stores, etc., to pay to advertise with us and put together a bag of discount
coupons/information to give during registration.
Tina suggested having water mugs with our logo for another thing to sell. Judy
suggested not using dates or place so that mugs that don't sell could be sold at
another reunion. Ginger suggested making some with and some without dates/place
on them.
Chuck wondered if we should try to arrange a travel agent to book airfare for
all attendees and get a deeper discount. Ken mentioned that Chris Kyrios ('75)
said that it had been tried for several reunions and was unsuccessful.
We talked about DJ's for Saturday night. Although both Ken and Tony Whalen
('76) have been DJ's before, Ken thought it would be better to get someone from
town so that Karlsruhe Kids would be able to socialize rather than work that
night. Tina mentioned knowing someone that had charged $100/hr. Ken said that
would be a good rate if we could get it.
Ken passed out copies of our contract with a 4/1/04 deadline. It has a 100-room
allotment/night, but we talked about lowering that number. It was decided that
we would send out a "feeler" e-mail to all the contacts we have and ask who
"might" be able to come, realizing that 2005 is a long time out to plan for
sure. That will give us a better handle on the numbers this far in advance.
Discussed in detail the Sunday picnic issue, addressing Bear Creek Regional
Park, USAFA, Monument Valley Park and others. Bear Creek is still our #1
choice. Bear Creek is located at 2002 Creek Crossing. Tina will take a look at
it and decide which pavilion would best suit our needs and book 7/3/05 for us.
We still have $100 in the account.
Alan was not at the meeting to update the T-Shirt information, so it was tabled
until the next meeting.
Chuck & Tina Schwarz will host the next meeting that is currently scheduled for
Saturday, March 27, 2004, at 1:00 pm at their house, located at 9270 Bellcove
Circle, Col Spgs (phone: 282-1720).
The meeting was adjourned at 9:30 pm.
Respectfully submitted,

2005 Reunion Planning Meeting
19 January 04
MINUTES
The meeting started at 6:00 pm with a dinner hosted by Lisa Scott,
Director of Sales and Chris Johnson, Sales Manager, for the Antlers
Hotel. Members in attendance were: Ken Hilte '77; Ginger (Angolia)
Clark '77 (and family); Chuck Schwarz ('78) and Judy (Kosan) Bygott
'72. (Alan and Tina were unavailable, Ed had a family medical
emergency and Bob is moving out of state.)
Minutes were discussed and approved, as they had been e-mailed prior to
the meeting.
The first question given the group was whether or not to utilize
"Reunions Are Us," a suggestion made by Chris Kyrios. We decided that
since we were willing to be so "hands on" with this reunion, we would
not need their services.
The decision was made by those in attendance to lock in the dates of
6/30/05-7/5/05 due to the reduced rates ($79/night) for that weekend as
well as people already having Monday off as a federal holiday. We are
promoting this reunion as being "family friendly" and hope that people
from other states will consider making this a 2005 summer vacation for
their entire family.
While speaking with Lisa Scott and Chris Johnson, they said that we
would get two hospitality suites if we can book 150 rooms. Otherwise,
we would need a minimum of 50 rooms to get one free hospitality suite.
During a tour of the hotel, we actually preferred the "Presidential
Suite," as our hospitality room. It consists of two large rooms, two
bathrooms and an outdoor patio. Most importantly, it allows us to
bring in our own food, drinks, and liquor. Other things that were
mentioned were: (1) underground parking is $7/night for hotel guests;
(2) there is an uncovered parking area across the street (price unknown
at this time); (3) $9.95/24 hours for WebTV; (4) $0.75 charge for local
connection or 1-800# for internet access online; and (5) for more than
two in a room, $12 @ person.
Other items of interest mentioned during the tour were: (1) meeting
room free with dinner (bartender/menu negotiable …, Ken twisted arms
and insisted on a "free bartender" if we host a dinner there); (2)
airport transportation questionable at this time (will know more later)
(about $20 for taxi); (3) 6.4% tax, 2% bed tax and 20% service charge
for dinner/event; (4) no resort fees; (5) 30 days in advance may drop
up to 20% of allotment of rooms with no penalty; and (6) no charge to
put in a dance floor.
In reference to reunion events, Ken found out Bear Creek Park would
cost between $25 - $150/day, depending on what we need. Transportation
also could be an issue (to & from park). Fee of $3 to call booking
with credit card.
A brief discussion was held in reference to the budget, the checking
account, etc. We still have $100 in the account.
Alan was not at the meeting to update the T-Shirt information, so it
was tabled until the next meeting
The appointed recruiter (Tina) was unable to attend; however, Chuck was
and will pass on the firm date so she can start putting out messages to
people on the various websites.
Ken mentioned that the Karlsruhe Kids are privileged to have at their
disposal three different web pages: kahs.net, kahsknights.org, and a
link to Richard Allen's website from kahsknights.org. Already, our
minutes and photo have been displayed on several of the sites for which
we are grateful.
Ken will sent back the West Virginia reunion video which Maria Benning
('76) lent us.
Diana Diaz (76') Fajardo had sent us her copy of the "Memory Book"
which was published for the 1990 New Orleans Reunion. It's obvious a
lot of work went in this quality item, we however, had concerns about
adding unnecessary costs to our event. The issue was tabled for a
meeting with larger attendance.
Although Fargo's is a great place for one of the dinner meals, Judy
suggested that the Flying W Ranch is more well-known and may bring in
more people. Fargo's is a "1800's Western Saloon" themed pizza
parlor. The "Flying W Ranch" is an "1800's Chuckwagon Dinner" show,
complete with games, music, etc. Tabled for later meeting.
Chuck & Tina Schwarz will host the next meeting that is currently
scheduled for Monday, February 16, 2004, at 6:00 pm at their house,
located at 9270 Bellcove Circle, Colorado Springs (phone: 719-
282-1720). If you're in the area, please make plans to attend. We
need lots of help!
The meeting was adjourned to take a tour of the facility. Entire
evening included in minutes, lasting until about 9:00 pm.

KAHS "Mile

2005 Reunion Planning Meeting
26 October 2003
MINUTES
The business part of the meeting started at 2:27 pm. Members in
attendance were: Ken Hilte '77; Bob '71 (and Sherry, the gracious
hostess) Sever; Ginger (Angolia) Clark '77; and Judy (Kosan) Bygott
'72. (Alan was at a science fiction writers' conference and Tina was
ill and unable to attend.) Bob & Sherry put on a GREAT lunch for us at
1:30 pm.
Minutes were discussed and approved, as they had been e-mailed prior to
the meeting. Several K-ruhe Kids wrote Ken back after they received
their copies of the minutes and had very favorable comments.
Alan was not present to discuss his findings of date conflicts;
however, Ken's contact at the
Antler's Adam's Mark had a great rate for
a downtown hotel for the weekend prior to the 4th of July (approx. 30
Jun - 3 Jul for reunion dates). He presented a written proposal from
the hotel to guarantee a rate of $79/night with one free hospitality
room based on 100 rooms if we secure those dates prior to 12/16/03.
Other dates in 2005 would start at $95/night.
Although Bob was able to get a rate of $79/night as well, he
recommended scrapping the Sheraton and concentrate on the
Adam's Mark
due to the proximity of amenities (there is basically nothing within
walking distance at the Col Spgs Sheraton). Bob also suggested to Ken
that he should negotiate for an additional hospitality suite. He also
reminded Ken to check on cancellation fee/policy, drop-dead date to
register, whether or not unfilled rooms would be billed to us, etc.
Ken will also ask about service fees and tourism taxes as well as
whether or not dinners would lower cost or "sweeten" the deal.
As mentioned previously, the area of Col Spgs where the Sheraton is
situated does not lend itself to close activities. Participants would
have to have access to transportation. However, since the
Antler's
Adam's Mark is downtown, there is almost anything one would want to go
to within walking distance; bars, micro-breweries, shopping, variety of
restaurants and fast food places, a movie theatre, gourmet ice cream
parlor and much more!
In reference to reunion events, Ken will check on reserving Bear Creek
Park and what that would entail. Defer to last month's minutes for the
current list of events, subject to change as we determine which hotel
and weekend.
As a group we discussed Gail's concerns and noted each for review by
chair head. We are comfortable to date with the direction the weekend
is headed and appreciate all comments and concerns. ("Brugs!")
Judy's husband, Pat, joined us briefly and added his thoughts on
various tourism ideas (likes and dislikes of area attractions).
(Thanks, Pat!)
A brief discussion was held in reference to the budget, the checking
account, etc. We still have $100 in the account and Judy still needs
to get the signature card to Bob for the 2nd signature. Judy mentioned
that she would be going to Asheville to find out how the funding works
for upcoming reunions.
We are still looking for a good logo/slogan including "KNIGHTS WITH
ALTITUDE," indicative of our area (like using mountains on it). Ken
designed a rough sketch with a chess-piece knight and our shield logo
with the above words inside, which looked quite nice. We will,
however, keep brainstorming for final logo.
The appointed recruiter (Tina) was unable to attend; however, Ken
strongly encouraged anyone remotely involved with the reunion to call,
e-mail and write to ALL friends, former teachers, alumnus and whomever
else they could think of, especially in a 500-mile radius of Colorado.
Knowing that we are going to be catering to families on this holiday
weekend, we want to allow everyone enough time to plan their vacations
early so they can't say NO! J
Ken brought a West Virginia reunion video that was sent by Maria
Benning ('76) but, due to time constraints, we were unable to view it
during the meeting. He mentioned that if anyone wants to see it, they
should contact him.
As we were closing the meeting, Ken remembered a pizza parlor with a
turn-of-the-century motif named "Fargo's" that would be perfect for
Friday night's dinner (with the hospitality party afterwards).
Finally, the members present unanimously agreed to have Judy present to
the Alumni Board the 30 June - 3 July, 2005, dates with the Antler's
Adam's Mark Hotel as our first preference, based on our knowledge of
the hotels and surrounding amenities.
Ken Hilte will host the next meeting that is currently scheduled for
Monday, January 19, 2004, at 6:00 pm at the
Antler's Adam's Mark Hotel
(4 S. Cascade Ave.) with dinner and a tour of the hotel, rooms and a
hospitality room.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:10 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Ginger Clark, Secretary
KAHS 2005 Reunion Committee
Dear
Knights,
Colorado Springs has been chosen to host the 2005 Karlsruhe Alumni
Reunion. The local Colorado Knights working toward hosting the reunion
have published minutes of their meeting for your information.
Ken Hilte 77'
KAHS "Mile High Knights"
2005 Reunion Planning Meeting
21 September 2003
MINUTES
The business part of the meeting started at 2:21 pm. Members in
attendance were: Ken Hilte '77; Bob '71 and Sherry Sever; Alan Lickiss
'80; Ginger (Angolia) Clark '77; Tina Dove Schwarz '80; and Judy Kosan
Bygott '72. A sign-in sheet was developed with addresses, phone
numbers and e-mail addresses. (Copies available through secretary.)

Officers and committee chairpeople were discussed and appointed:
Ginger Clark, Secretary; Judy Bygott, Treasurer (with Bob as 2nd
signature); Ken Hilte and Bob Sever, co-leaders; Bob Sever, Lodging
Coordinator; Tina Schwarz, Recruiter; and Alan Lickiss, Web-Meister and
Promotional Item Coordinator.
When we discussed "Purpose & Goals," we made an assumption that we
would have pre-planned activities including "down-time." We mentioned
that our fellow KAHS alumnae will have paid lots of money to come visit
and will want to "see the sights" as well as reminisce with friends.
We realized that it would be better to avoid major events like the
USAFA Graduation (end of May), the PPIR Busch Race (end of July), the
Front Range International (end of May/beginning of June), and the Pikes
Peak Marathon (end of August). Also important to consider, but without
dates at this time, are the Indy Racing League and the Annual Pancake
Breakfast (downtown - draws crowds of thousands). Four dates are
currently being considered; the weekends of 7/7, 7/14, 8/4 or 8/11/05.
Alan will research hotel prices/big events to narrow down dates. Ken
and Bob will also check their sources for prices and availability.
A variety of hotel names were mentioned to begin to narrow down the
search including, but not limited to, the Wyndham, the South Circle
Sheraton (Bob has previous partnership there) and the Antlers (I think
Ken has connections here). Things to consider are the following: 1)
that they will support the size of the group; 2) location and 3)
price. We will block 100 rooms to have unused rooms dropped at a
certain date with no fee. Judy mentioned that we need two hospitality
suites, we have to use the hotel's food for the suites and a room for
dancing.
We discussed reunion events in the order of the weekend. Alan
mentioned that we could possibly offer to pick up people at the airport
and transfer them to the hotel if transportation is not provided by the
hotel. We discussed having all-day excursions available for "Early
Birds" on Wednesday and/or Thursday. All events discussed so far have
been: trip to Manitou Springs, Old Colorado City, Cripple Creek,
Denver, Rafting Trip, US Air Force Academy tour, Focus on the Family
tour, Olympic Training Center tour, and Garden of the Gods tour. We
talked about incorporating family stuff to encourage people to bring
their kids. We also talked about teens of KAHS to babysit in the
hospitality suite for a nominal fee based on age and quantity of
children. Mentioned trying to get a DJ for dinner one night. Also,
Sunday's picnic would be good at either Fox Run Park (in the Black
Forest) or Bear Creek Park. No decisions final at this time.
Alan and Ken mentioned picking up flyers for packets at the Chamber of
Commerce.
A brief discussion was held in reference to the budget, the checking
account, etc. Ken has "loaned" the committee $100.00 to date to open
an account and buy incidentals to be reimbursed once we get a cash-flow
started.
Tina said she would work on recruiting for the 2005 Reunion,
encouraging more "kids" from the '80's and '90's to attend. Ken
encouraged her to try telephoning as well as e-mailing to get a
response.
Alan mentioned that he could man a web-site as a "reunion link" from
the KAHS web-site. He also mentioned that he works for a promotional
company to get stuff at cost. For instance, 100 T-Shirts could be only
$5/shirt. Also, mentioned possibility of sending out magnets with our
logo and the dates on it with the registration forms.
Ideas for logo/slogan included "KNIGHTS WITH ALTITUDE" and using either
the Karlsruhe Knight or perhaps a chess-piece knight.
Other ideas discussed were the "Superlative" awards to be given and
types of prizes we could use. Nothing decided at this time.
Bob Sever will host the next meeting that is currently scheduled for
Sunday, October 26, 2003, at 1:30 pm in Parker, CO.
The meeting was adjourned at about 4:00 pm when Tina and Ginger had to
leave for prior commitments.
Respectfully submitted,
Ginger Clark, Secretary
