Robert “Buck” Elbridge Bridges

LAWNDALE — Mr. Robert “Buck” Elbridge Bridges, 87, of 125 Lewis Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 8, 1915, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Marcus Hoyle Bridges and Ola Myrtle Mode Bridges. He retired as a self-employed plumber. He was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church and a charter member of Fallston Volunteer Fire Department.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, Lawrance Bridges, Paul Bridges, Hubert Bridges, Colon Bridges, Marcus Bridges Jr., Hamer Carl Bridges and an infant brother; and two sisters, Laura Blanton and Mary Bridges.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Bessie Wright Bridges of Lawndale; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Jack and Mary Ellen Bridges of Hickory and Andy and Ponola Bridges of Cherryville; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Shirley and Billy Bingham of Lynchburg, Va., and Linda and Robert Walker of Lawndale; two brothers, Nelson Bridges of Bessemer City and Corbett Bridges of Loganville, Ga.; five sisters, Lillian Blanton of Belwood, Melba Willis and Helen Neal, both of Cherryville, and Betty Lingerfelt and Connie Warlick, both of Kings Mountain; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Friendship United Methodist Church with the Revs. Erman Bradley and H.L. Talbert officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home.
