Vangie Ethel Irene Costner Spangler

LAWNDALE — Mrs. Vangie Ethel Irene Costner Spangler, 86, of 2520 Ball Park Road, died Monday morning, Nov. 11, 2002, in her sleep at her home on the farm in the Double Shoals community. 

Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of Pressley and Florence Hamrick Costner. She was born Nov. 11, 1916. She was a homemaker and had worked at Stamey’s Department Store and J.C. Penney’s on the Square in Shelby. She was a member of Double Shoals Baptist Church. She was the widow of Arthur Lee Spangler Jr., who passed away on July 11, 1997. They had been married 63 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and four sisters. They were Valarie Hoyle, Vetus Bridges, Lucy Wright and A.V. Williams. 

She is survived by a sister, Thera Bess of Shelby; three sons, Carroll Lee Spangler of Shelby, Daniel G. Spangler of Monroe and Arthur David Spangler of Lawndale; four daughters, Janice C. Spangler of Charlotte, Joanne Spangler of Shelby, Jacqueline S. Taylor of Greenville, S.C., and Brenda S. Cook of Casar; a sister-in-law, Betty S. Dedmon of Shelby; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Double Shoals Baptist Church with the Rev. Eric Davis officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes before the service.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home of Fallston.
