Cleve Edison Newton

ELLENBORO — Mr. Cleve Edison Newton, 86, of 1051 Mount Olivet Church Road, died Saturday, July 12, 2003, at Autumn Care in Forest City.

A native of Cleveland County, he was born May 25, 1917. He was a retired self-employed carpenter and member of Mount Olivet Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl Champion Newton; his parents, Julius M. Newton and Cornelia Cook Newton; two sons, Cecil Newton and Joe Newton; a sister, Lona Buff and a grandchild.

He is survived by two sons, Eddie Newton of Ellenboro and Hugh Lee Cook of Hickory; four daughters, Wanda Goodwin of Woodruff, S.C., Janice Turner of Polk County, Judy Sisk of Forest City and Dot Bray of High Point; a brother, Robert Newton of Casar, three sisters, Wilma Walker of Casar, Annie Maude Walker of Casar and Ruby Costner of Casar; 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

The funeral will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Mount Olivet Baptist Church, with the Revs. Jimmy Black and Boyce Gregory officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home.
