Marie Scism Newton

CASAR — Mrs. Marie Scism Newton, 86, formerly of Wes Cook Road, Casar, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.

A loving wife, wonderful mother and grandmother, she was born in Cleveland County to the late Bruce Scism and Fannie Buff Scism Deal. She was a retired textile worker and homemaker. She was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church, where she was a choir member, assistant musician and Sunday school teacher. Her hobbies included gardening, bird watching and music.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, J.Z. Newton, her stepfather, Philmore Deal; two infant brothers; two brothers, Willard Scism and Grier Scism; two infant sisters; and a sister, Helen Scism.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, J.B. and Naomi Newton of Fallston and Paul and Glenda Newton of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Lucille and James Green of Lawndale, Barbara and Bobby Parker of Casar and Margaret and Steve Morrison of Casar; four sisters, Edith Ashley of Lawndale, Clara Mae Towery of Vale, Estelle Hoyle of Shelby and Iva Meade of Shelby.

The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Baptist Church in Casar, with Dr. Ernest Speagle officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 7 at Stamey Funeral Home in Fallston. At other times, the family will be at the home of Lucille and James Green, 420 St. Paul Church Road, Lawndale.
